Each H.E.L.P. workbook uses clean, vocabulary rich, socially relevant lyrics that introduce various social justice and literacy development activities that can be used across all subject areas. Pre- and Post-test assessments are available to help determine students’ reading levels.
Our 14 H.E.L.P. titles feature popular, socially relevant, & clean Hip Hop songs as a starting point to engage students in effective literacy instruction across the curriculum. Each student guide includes artist bio, vocabulary words, and 60 literacy activities divided into four reading levels, called “studios”, to allow for easy differentiation in the classroom. All books are linked to various social justice themes, such as poverty, violence, environmental issues, etc., and each activity is aligned with national reading standards.
HELP is designed to facilitate culturally responsive teaching, as well as grade appropriate content for low level readers. A variety of resources are included in the Teacher Guide to assist the instructor in meeting the needs of a diverse student population: Resources include: Artist biography, discussion questions, annotated lyrics, vocabulary words, writing rubric, scope and sequence, answer keys, multiple intelligence activities, suggested supplemental reading lists, and pre- and post- assessments.
